Volunteer activities
Your time on the Galapagos Islands Conservation Project will be action-packed and rewarding.
Wildlife Monitoring
- Conduct population surveys and collect biometric data
- Monitor sea lion populations and behaviour
- Participate in surveys of sea birds
Giant Tortoise Breeding Centre
- Feed and care for Giant Tortoises before they are released into the wild
- Harvest otoy plants to feed the Giant Tortoises
- Assist National Park Rangers with cleaning and maintaining Giant Tortoise enclosures
Invasive Species Control
- Assist in efforts to control invasive animal populations, protecting native species from predation.
- Walk and play with dogs at a community shelter which neuters and finds homes for stray dogs.
- Participate in targeted interventions, like the Galapagos petrel conservation project, to reduce the impact of invasive rats.
Plant Restoration
- Help remove harmful, non-native plants and reintroduce indigenous species to restore the natural balance of the Galapagos ecosystems.
- Work at our plant nursery to grow native and endemic plant species.
- Transplant seedlings from the nursery into the wild.
Community Engagement
- Join beach clean-ups to protect wildlife and maintain the pristine environment.
- Contribute to data collection by weighing collected litter to identify problem areas and track progress.
- Share your passion for conservation by participating in educational programs at local schools.

A day in the life of a Galapagos volunteer
No two days are the same. You'll immerse yourself in diverse conservation efforts, from monitoring wildlife to restoring habitats and educating local communities.
A Typical Day
Fuel up with breakfast at your shared accommodation and head to the Projects Abroad office. We'll transport you to your work site, where your day begins around 8am. If you're joining a bird-watching session, get ready for an early 5am start. You’ll be returned to your accommodation for lunch and a rest before the afternoon activities.
Your Free Time
Wrap up your conservation work in the mid-afternoon and embrace island life. Unwind on the beach, explore the town with your fellow volunteers, or simply soak up the sun. Weekends offer even more opportunities for adventure. Learn to scuba dive, explore nearby islands, or relax with a well-deserved siesta.

Food and accommodation
You'll share accommodation with other Projects Abroad volunteers and interns during your stay in San Cristóbal. This is a great way to get to know your fellow volunteers and interns, share experiences, and explore your surroundings in your free time together. You can also request to stay with a host family in San Cristóbal.
The accommodation is safe, clean, and comfortable. Your programme fees include three meals a day.
