Getting Ready for Your Big Adventure

We know you're eager to start your overseas volunteer programme, but it's crucial to make sure everything’s in order before you go. Let's tick off some essentials to help ensure a smooth journey:

Travel Documents:

  • Passport: Double-check its expiry date — all our destinations require a minimum of six months validity from the start date of the trip.
  • Visas: You will need to obtain any necessary visas well in advance — your designated Destination Expert will help you manage this once you have booked.
  • Vaccinations: Consult your doctor or a travel clinic to get the recommended vaccinations for your destination.

Other Essentials:

  • Travel Insurance: A must-have for any trip, ensuring you're covered for unexpected events.
  • Spending Money: Exchange enough cash into the local currency to cover your expenses while you're there.

Both of these will be discussed with your Destination Expert on your first call after you book, ensuring you aren’t travelling unprepared.

Taking care of these details now will give you peace of mind and allow you to focus on the exciting adventure ahead. Remember, we're here to support you every step of the way.

Clothing and accessories

There are some things you will want to make sure you pack no matter where you are travelling or what you are doing on your international volunteering project.

These include:

  • underwear
  • socks
  • shoes (trainers or walking shoes and casual shoes)
  • tops
  • bottoms (trousers, shorts, skirts)
  • a belt
  • a waterproof jacket (yes, even in warmer countries!)
  • a backpack
  • pyjamas
  • spares of everything listed above

You may also want a few optional extras depending on the climate and weather of your destination and the activities you might do. For example, many of our destinations are hot and dry throughout June, July, and August, but parts of Latin America can be cold and wet as our summer is their winter.

This means you may want:

  • swimwear
  • sandals or beach shoes
  • a beach towel
  • sunglasses
  • a waterproof watch
  • hats
  • gloves
  • a scarf
  • thermal socks or underwear
  • a winter coat

Toiletries

While we will ensure you have a clean bathroom and hygiene essentials, you’ll still want a toiletry bag to stay comfortable throughout your volunteer work. You may even want to freshen up during your flight or after a long day’s work before your social events in the evening.

Don’t forget to pack your:

  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • deodorant
  • make-up
  • make-up remover
  • skincare
  • feminine hygiene products
  • shampoo and conditioner
  • hairbrush
  • toilet paper for public toilets

Health products

You may also need some healthcare essentials for your volunteering project, including your essential medication and some basic first-aid supplies. Not only can they help in an emergency, they can also help to put your mind at ease!

Think about:

  • any essential medication
  • painkillers
  • plasters
  • antiseptic cream
  • sun cream
  • insect repellent
  • rehydration sachets
  • hand sanitizer

Packing for Comfort and Convenience

Beyond the essentials, let's pack some items that will make your volunteer experience even better.

To round out your travel list, think about taking:

  • your phone and charger
  • travel adaptors for plugs
  • your laptop and charger
  • an external power bank
  • earphones or headphones
  • a pack of cards or travel games
  • a book or e-reader
  • a reusable water bottle
  • snacks from home
  • a phrase or language book
  • camera
  • journal and pen
  • suitcase padlock
  • small backpack for daily use

Don’t forget to leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs too!
