If you’re still on the fence about the benefits of volunteering abroad, new research has shown that it’s not just employers and universities who see you as being more attractive—it’s everyone.
In a survey of 10,000 people in the UK, Europe, and United States by the International Committee for Beautiful People, the majority (87%) confessed to finding people who volunteer abroad more attractive.
This was in sharp contrast to other traditionally attractive pursuits, and significantly more than fireman (56%) footballers (35%) and “singers in a cool band” (12%).
This original research was aimed at establishing a definitive ranking of people’s travel choices and career prospects using criteria such as responsibility, fun, and attractiveness.
People who had volunteered were ranked among the most attractive, with those who volunteer abroad being perceived as by far the most attractive.
Interestingly, brain surgeons and rocket scientists also ranked highly, which hints at a similar level of intelligence being the key factor.
One particularly excited survey respondent stated:
"I’ve always appreciated the type of person that uses their time to help others, but there is something so attractive about the type of person who volunteers abroad. They’re selfless but also possess a spirit of adventure and the confidence to leave their comfort zone.”
Younger respondents were the most likely to say they found international volunteers attractive. The majority (94%) of those aged 15 to 18 revealed they could see themselves spending their life with someone who has either volunteered or interned abroad.
People who volunteered abroad also ranked highly for nice smiles, aroma, and sense of humour.
Looking further into the data, over half of those surveyed said they had lied about being a volunteer abroad to impress someone they liked. Nearly three-quarters claimed not having volunteered abroad was a deal-breaker when it came to a romantic interest.
Finally, 79% said they would volunteer abroad so that they could add their experience to an online dating profile.
So, in simple terms then, volunteering abroad is more than just rewarding—it’s irresistible.
